Transportation is Destiny: In an entertaining, easy-to-understand,
inspirational manner, Transportation is Destiny evaluates why cars are
deadly to the health of a city, and provides a cookbook of tactics that can be
used by citizens, activists, professional planners, and elected officials to
protect the community quality of life and overall sustainability. The speech
briefly summarizes my book, published by Preager in 2003—perhaps the most
provocative speech I give, and the one I have most fun delivering.
Effective Tactics for Increasing the Number
of Bicyclists and Pedestrians: Effective tactics are
rarely used in America. By effectively growing the number of bicyclists and
pedestrians, we also significantly improve their safety.
Complete Streets: The many important benefits of Complete
Streets (streets that are safe, convenient & comfortable for pedestrians,
bicyclists, transit users, as well as cars), and how to change the street
design paradigm in your community so that Complete Streets are the default design.
Transforming Strip Commercial into a
Walkable, Livable Place: Most
all American communities have “Anywhere USA” strip commercial road corridors.
Learn how they can be incrementally transformed into a community asset, rather
than an unlovable liability.
The Car is the Enemy of the City: Why over-dependence on car travel is
detrimental to the health of a city. This one summarizes my forthcoming book.
Government Opposition to Smart Growth: How local governments, not evil or greedy
developers, are usually the biggest opponents of Smart Growth.
One-Way Streets: Are the benefits worth the costs?
Big Box Retail: What can a community do about these large
retailers? Big Box retail problems and strategies to reduce their harmful
potential.
Sprawl: How to define it, why it is a problem, strategies to
minimize it, and smart growth techniques.
Walkable Neighborhoods: How We Lost Them
& How We Can Get Them Back: A
summary of the history of community development, how we lost our way, and how
we can return to the walkable tradition.
Healthy People, Healthy Streets, Healthy
Communities: Fighting
obesity and other health problems with urban design.
Pedestrian Design Principles: An introductory kick-off for creating a
pedestrian master plan.
Bicycle Transportation Design Principles: An introductory kick-off for creating a
bicycle master plan.
Protecting Neighborhood Quality of Life: An overview of strategies.
Road "Diets": Improving
streets by narrowing them.
Creating
a Community Vision: Essential elements for creating a vision.
Forgiving
Streets vs. Attentive Streets: The need for a change in the street
design paradigm.
A
Recipe for Addressing a Downtown Parking Problem: Downtowns need to
use parking spaces more efficiently. It all starts with a downtown vision.
Electronic
Signs: Regulatory options needed to control this emerging threat to
the character of communities.
Great
Streets, Great Neighborhoods:
A recipe for creating healthy streets and healthy neighborhoods.
Bicycle
Parking: Best designs and best locations.
